This fundraising film follows Lupe, a first-generation Mexican American student and junior at Seattle Pacific University. Having been part of Rainier Athletes since the fifth grade, her narrative provides a long-term look at the program’s impact as she now pursues a career in apparel design. The story highlights how RA’s focus on "identity statements" helped Lupe navigate the complexities of growing up in Bellevue, giving her the confidence to move beyond the status quo and "Defy Gravity" within the fashion industry. By framing her success through her own metaphor, that Rainier Athletes is like an athleisure brand “where you can be comfortable in your own skin".
Abdul’s Story
This film centers on the journey of Abdul, a Rainier Athletes student who arrived in the U.S. at age seven. The narrative follows his transformation from a young student struggling to express himself into a confident, empathetic leader known for his humor and "light." Through the lens of Abdul’s enduring relationship with his first mentor, Peter, the story reveals how Rainier Athletes provided the consistent “push” needed to unlock the creative and leadership qualities that were previously “stuck inside”. Abdul’s story beautifully illustrates the impact of long-term mentorship, reminding us that with the right community behind them, young people can fully realize their own potential and identity.
